How can I become a member of the Ballroom Dance Club?
Basic membership costs are $40 per person with student ID and $90 for the general public. Membership covers our weekly taught Beginner lessons on Mondays and Wednesdays (7:35-9:00pm, Rangos Ballroom), and a few other perks, such as reduced prices at USA Dance socials held on campus.
Do I have to bring a partner?
No, a partner is not necessary at lessons. As a matter of fact, we encourage people to rotate partners in order to facilitate learning and socialization.
Who teaches the lessons?
Beginner lessons are mostly taught by our advanced students, while technique classes are all taught by professionals.
What lessons should I attend?
If you are new to ballroom dancing, we recommend you start with the Beginner lessons. If you have previous experience with the dance (you can gain experience by taking the beginner lessons in that dance!), you are eligible to take the Intermediate lessons.
If you are interested in technique classes, attend our Beginner and Intermediate lessons.
The upper Intermediate lessons require solid experience in ballroom; if you think you are ready to advance, ask an officer about auditions!
Do I have to compete?
No one is required to compete but it is encouraged that you do so! It is a great experience and will really help you advance in your dancing. You will also be able to see other competitors, watch professional performances and get inspired to learn more ballroom!
What is the difference between American style dancing and International style dancing?
American style dancing was developed by major U.S. Ballroom studios while international style dancing was developed by the British. In many parts of the world, only international style is used but in North America, both styles are used. In competitions, you can compete in both styles.
Some major differences include that American Rhythm is danced on bent legs while International Latin is danced on straight legs. American Smooth dancing has a lot more open and individual steps while International Standard is danced in a closed position most of the time.
What are Auditions?
Auditions demonstrate a dancer's ability and are one of the determining factors for placement into our more advanced classes. Any individual who is interested in advancing should talk to an officer about the audition times and process.
What do we look at at Auditions?
We look at auditions like a dance competition. If the dancer is confident and competent in dancing at the Beginner level, they may advance to our Intermediate lessons.
For how long are the audition results valid?
Audition results hold for the semester, but we encourage dancers to keep practicing and try out for the next semester!
